Milwaukee residents who come into our offices for the first time are often exhausted and anxious. They have typically been harassed endlessly by creditors and are overwhelmed by the burdens of debt.
The good news is that after making the call to a bankruptcy lawyer for help, you can finally take a deep breath. You have taken the first step in addressing your financial situation head-on, and you will have help doing so.
To further put your mind at ease, here are some tips on what to expect from our first meeting as well as a list of items to bring.
The pre-bankruptcy planning stage is all about understanding your debt to income ratio so that we can determine which option best suits your situation. We will discuss Chapter 7 and Chapter 13, but also alternatives to filing for bankruptcy.
Timing is also an important factor to consider, as it could be better in your situation to wait to file for bankruptcy so that you can discharge your debt without losing the assets you want to keep. The goal is always to take care of the debt problem while protecting your assets.
What to bring to our first meeting:
- Tax returns from the past two years
- Most recent paystubs and an estimate of what your income has been for the past six months
- For the self-employed: Your business income and expenses for the past six months
- List of bills and debts
- Estimate of how much your home is worth and how much you owe on it
